ॐ सोमाय नमः
The night the moon shines with all sixteen kalas, Maa Lakshmi's Kojagari night, Shri Krishna's Maharaas — and the tradition of moonlit kheer, offered as bhog and shared as prasad.
The full moon of Ashwin
Sharad Purnima is the full moon of the month of Ashwin, the first full moon after the rains. It is believed to be the only night of the year when the moon shines with all sixteen kalas, its complete set of qualities — which is why Shri Krishna, born with all sixteen kalas, is so closely tied to this night.
On this night the moon's rays are said to carry amrit, the nectar of immortality. Families prepare kheer from milk, rice and sugar and leave it under the open sky through the night, so that it soaks in the moonlight. In the morning it is offered to God and shared as prasad.
In 2026, Sharad Purnima falls on Sunday, 25 October.
Maa Lakshmi's night
In Bengal, Odisha, Mithila and many other regions this night is Kojagari Purnima. It is believed that Maa Lakshmi travels across the earth asking “Ko jagarti?” — “Who is awake?” — and blesses the homes where she finds devotees awake, lamps lit and her name on their lips.
Families keep a vrat, worship Maa Lakshmi in the evening, stay awake with bhajans, and offer kheer and other sweets made with milk. A popular belief also holds that Maa Lakshmi appeared from the churning of the ocean on this full moon.

Shri Krishna in Vrindavan
The Bhagavata Purana describes autumn nights fragrant with blooming jasmine, when Shri Krishna played his flute on the banks of the Yamuna and the gopis came running to him. Their circle dance, the Maharaas, is remembered on Sharad Purnima, which is why it is also called Raas Purnima.
In Vrindavan and Mathura, temples are decorated in white, the Lord is dressed in white garments, and kheer is offered as bhog under the moon.
भगवानपि ता रात्रीः शरदोत्फुल्लमल्लिकाः। वीक्ष्य रन्तुं मनश्चक्रे योगमायामुपाश्रितः॥
— Shrimad Bhagavatam 10.29.1 · “Seeing those autumn nights fragrant with blooming jasmine, the Lord, through his Yogamaya, turned his mind to the Raas.”
Tradition
Milk and rice are among the purest offerings — sattvik, white like moonlight, and dear to both Maa Lakshmi and Chandra Dev. Kheer made with them is the natural bhog for this night.
Sharad Purnima also marks the turn of the season. Traditional wisdom holds that a cooling dish of milk and rice, kept in the soft autumn moonlight, helps the body settle after the heat of the rains — a custom loved for generations.
Sharing the kheer is part of the vrat: the blessing of the night grows when the prasad reaches many hands.
At home
A bath, a sankalp for the vrat and worship of the family deity. Many keep a fast till the evening.
Lakshmi pujan with lamps and flowers; when the moon rises it is offered arghya with water, milk and rice.
Kheer is kept under the open sky, covered with a thin cloth, while the family stays awake with bhajans and the katha.
The kheer is offered to God and shared as prasad — first with elders and children, then with everyone.
