शुभं करोति कल्याणमारोग्यं धनसम्पदा।
Why Kartik is the holiest month for lighting lamps, the Damodar leela of Shri Krishna, the festivals of light from Dhanteras to Dev Deepawali — and what a single diya stands for.
Lord Vishnu's month
Kartik, the month that follows Sharad Purnima, is held to be the most sacred month of the year. The Kartik Mahatmya of the Skanda and Padma Puranas sings the glory of bathing at dawn, reading the scriptures, worshipping Tulsi and, above all, offering lamps.
Lord Vishnu is believed to awaken from his four-month yoga nidra on Dev Uthani Ekadashi in this month, and a lamp lit for him in Kartik is said to bring great punya. Even one diya, offered with devotion, is believed to light up the soul.
PavitraOne's Kartik Deepdaan runs from 27 October to Kartik Purnima on 24 November 2026.

— Deepa jyoti shloka · “Salutations to the light of the lamp, which brings auspiciousness, wellbeing, health and wealth, and destroys ill will.”
Shri Krishna in Gokul
One morning in Kartik, little Krishna broke a pot of curd and ate the butter. Maa Yashoda tried to tie him to a mortar, but every rope fell two fingers short — until, moved by her love, he let himself be bound. Tied at the waist (dama, rope; udara, waist), he came to be called Damodar.
The Damodarashtakam, found in the Padma Purana, is sung every evening of Kartik while devotees offer lamps to Shri Damodar. This is why Kartik is also called Damodar maas.

Meaning
A lamp is the simplest offering and one of the most profound. Its flame always rises upward, as the mind should; it dispels darkness without effort, as knowledge dispels ignorance.
A ghee diya is considered the purest. Lamps offered in the name of the family, of the children, or of departed ancestors are believed to bring light into their lives too.

— Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 1.3.28 · “Lead me from darkness to light.”
